A Brief Note On The National Resources Defense Council Essay

Problem Statement According to the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC), an environmental action group, the food waste that occurs currently in the USA is approximately 40%. A staff scientist from NRDC, Dana Ganders, a staff scientist who focuses on food for NRDC, compares it to buying five bags of groceries, dropping two of them in the parking lot and then walking away. The food waste situation has worsened in the last couple of decades. From 1960 to present the food thrown out increased from 12.2 million tons of food to more than 35 million tons. In just half a century, Americans had almost tripled the amount of food that filled our landfills. Why is this a problem? Well are several aspects that can be considered: Increased costs for fruit and vegetables affects the consumer disposable income. Food costs have been risen more than 42% in the last 10 years and the costs of fruits and vegetables have risen during the years much more than other food products and they are expected to continue growing in the future. This can have a serious impact on the disposable income of consumers who uses significant quantities of fruits and vegetables or they may redirect the consumer to other types of food that are less healthy. (See Fig. 6 7). One of the reasons that the vegetables and fruits prices are going up is because of the increasing production costs incurred by farmers.
